Eureka Street recently posted an interesting piece by Andrew Phelan, Why the Australian Church needs a vision, not just a process. My browser summarised it thus:
The Australian Church’s response to reform is hindered by three failures: the collapse of institutional trust due to abuse scandals, mutual distrust between clergy and laity, and the absence of a coherent vision for the Church’s future. While formation is important, it is insufficient to address these issues. The Church needs a clear vision of what it aims to become, one that inspires and energises people, rather than relying solely on processes and procedures.
It is worth reading the whole piece to get a sense of what is happening in one diocese, how that falls short of ideal, and how the Australian Church might develop a vision toward which we can move together. The answer is not in blindly following processes or leaders who have no vision for where they wish to lead.
