Silicon Valley priest: Encyclical gives new impetus to Church–Big Tech dialogue

Fr. McGuire writes that as Church, we certainly do not agree on everything, but that it is essential that we follow Pope Francis’ idea of synod: listening, encountering, and working with people. He believes that the dialogue has been able to have with the Tech community in Silicon Valley has been very fruitful.

That dialogue must continue even when the Church’s approach is critical or prophetic, as it is in Magnifica humanitas with regard to Big Tech: the major technology companies that hold power and control “for the few,” often to the detriment of those already living on the margins of economic and social life.

If we truly want the Church to make a difference in the world and to evolve or reform its own processes and views then informed participation in dialogue seems essential. In some ways this medium – something posted online in a blog with opportunity for comments – seems well suited to conversations in a synodal style. I am able to reflect on what has been posted, take time to construct my response, and post it for others to read. Too often in our face-to-face conversations our capacity for listening is diminished because we are busy thinking of our response. In this medium I need not rush to express my thoughts and know that those who may respond to me will have the same opportunity.
