A post by Julie Rubio on the Catholic Moral Theology blog picks up on Pope Leo’s discussion of the principles of Catholic social teaching in Magnifica Humanitas. The post notes that different sources offer different lists of principles but that the Pope has presented a structure in which “human dignity and rights are now understood as the foundation anchoring five principles: the common good, the universal destination of material goods, subsidiarity, solidarity, and social justice.“
The post goes on to discuss the omission of some ‘principles’ that are included in other lists and to make valuable points about the development of Church teaching about social thought.
How Many Principles of CST Are There? is a short but thought provoking read and the website offers a variety of other interesting reading.
